Venue

Auditorio Príncipe Felipe, Oviedo (Asturias).

The forests of Asturias have a high productivity, but it is also one of the areas most affected by forest fires in Spain.

About 60 people representing different forest and wood sector institutions in the north-west of Spain (Principality of Asturias administration, Oviedo University, University of Santiago de Compostela, private companies, research centres and groups (Indurot, Lourizán, UXFS), as well as other FORRISK partners (HAZI and NEIKER-Tecnalia from Spain and INRA from France) attended the event.

In the first part of the seminar, experts from Indurot, the Principality of Asturias Mountain Service, the Asturias Firefighters and CETEMAS gave an overview of the situation regarding forest fires in Asturias.

Invited experts from Lourizán and the UXFS then gave examples of the work that has been developed on forest fires in the Atlantic Arc.

Important subjects that were explored included the importance of silvicultural management and the optimization of the residual biomass utilization, the use of simulation tools, the possibilities offered by prediction models and LiDAR technology, as well as forest modeling for improving these tools with regards to fire prevention and extinction. The seminar was also a good opportunity for discussion and sharing of experiences.

The following day, CETEMAS hosted the FORRISK final meeting, with field visits to permanent trial sites, a reference for integral forest management for improving forest products and the decrease of biotic and abiotic risks.
